What is therapy?

Physical Therapy:

The physical therapists at UP Rehab Services are responsible for evaluating residents and developing a plan of care.

Physical therapists and PTA’s provide an exercise program to all the residents who have physician orders for PT. They work on strengthening muscles, gait training, balance training, bed mobility and educating residents, caregivers and family members. They utilize modalities such as; ice, heat, ultrasound and electrical stimulation in conjunction with the exercise program to promote a healing environment. They assist residents with selection of appropriate assistive devices.

They prepare residents for safe and seamless return home.

Occupational Therapy:

Occupational Therapy is the art and science of helping people establish and complete the daily routine activities that are importent to them regardless of impairement, or disability.

By working within the arenas of Activities of Daily living, Work Productive Activities, and Play and Leisure Activities, the occpational therapist provides a service to re-establish roles into peoples' lives that are meaningful and purposeful. Through the use of a variety of multiple therapuetic modalities the occupational therapist strives to enrich a persons life and acheive the maximum potential for quality and independence.

Speech-Language Therapy:

Speech-language pathologists provide both restorative and maintenance services to residents of nursing homes. The restorative services include the identification, evaluation and treatment services to people with communication disorders. The work of speech-language pathologists is designed to improve the quality of life/quality of care of individuals suffering from a variety of conditions. Individuals suffering from progressive neurological disorders such as dementia, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and multiple sclerosis and nonprogressive neurological disorders such as cerebrovascular accidents and trauma resulting in conditions such as aphasia, apraxia, dysphagia, and dysarthria comprise a major part of the caseload.

Speech-language pathologists are also involved in indirect patient care by providing case management, counseling, staff development, and instruction to the client, family members, significant others, and other professionals. The primary goal of a speech-language pathologist is to promote acquisition and maintenance of the highest potential level of functional communication.
